Oxford Chiropractic Care May Better for Vertebral Fractures than Vertebroplasty

Satterwhite Chiropractic recommends curcumin for pain reduction and Oxford conservative care for vertebral fractures instead of vertebroplasty.

NO VERTEBROPLASTY FOR VERTEBRAL FRACTURE

Oxford Chiropractic Option for Conservative Care

Painful osteoporotic vertebral fractures occur in the vertebral bones of the spine. Often brought on by a fall or injury, a Oxford vertebral fracture (compression fracture) occurs when a vertebra – a bone of the spine - will fall in on itself, resulting in the bone to reduce in size.  Researchers and doctors found a way to “fix” these vertebral fractures by adding a cement type compound into the collapsed bone to get it to normal size again. This procedure is called vertebroplasty. It made sense. However, a recent Cochrane Review study of the outcomes over numerous years reveal that high- to moderate-quality evidence reports no important benefit of vertebroplasty for acute or subacute osteoporotic vertebral fractures and warns of its potential for harm. Adverse side-effects from vertebroplasty include osteomyelitis, cord compression, thecal sac injury and respiratory failure. (1) How does chiropractic care conservatively manage a vertebral compression fracture? Consult your Oxford chiropractor. The appropriate time after injury to add gentle Cox® Technic to the treatment plan for a vertebral fracture (typically around 6 weeks with careful tolerance testing) will be clarified. In the meantime, there are conservative options like bracing, good posture (with even a little extension), pain medications, etc., to ease the pain. Your Oxford chiropractor at Satterwhite Chiropractic is ready to help!

Pain-relieving curcumin may be a good addition to the Oxford chiropractic treatment plan.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Try Curcumin!

Curcumin is a plant-derived natural compound from the rhizome of the turmeric (curcuma longa) plant. It’s useful for treating and preventing any number of diseases, especially age-associated ones like cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation and infection. (2) What an amazing polyphenol! It’s even shown to be superior to corticosteroids for dropping inflammation and to be beneficial alone and/or in combination with antibiotics for being antibacterial. (3,4) With so many outstanding benefits, curcumin may be a great supplement to your nutrition routine. Let us talk about it at your next Oxford chiropractic visit at Satterwhite Chiropractic!
