Hip fractures. These are significant health
issues around the world. Oxford hip fracture risk is impacted negatively
by drugs taken for all sorts of issues and positively
by nutritional supplements. Satterwhite Chiropractic always considers the risk of fragility hip fracture in our patients with
osteoporosis and carefully observes
our Oxford osteoporotic patients. A new, uncomplicated
way to address hip fracture risk seems to be daily
multivitamin supplementation. Easy!
Oxford OSTEOPOROSIS AND HIP FRACTURE
As easy as it seems, just figuring out
who are at risk for osteoporotic hip fractures and treating them to avoid
a hip fracture is occasionally difficult! A meta-analysis
(a top-level review) of published research data about
the effectiveness of screening the general population reported
that such screening reduced osteoporotic fractures and hip
fractures. (1) Satterwhite Chiropractic is vigilant about looking for at-risk
Oxford osteoporotic and hip fracture patients.
DRUGS AND Oxford OSTEOPOROTIC HIP FRACTURE
Fragility hip fractures and associated issues
like mortality are issues for healthcare providers. Some
pharmaceutical products are described as changing
bone structure and impact the risk of fragility hip fractures.
These drugs were significantly associated with
these fractures in this review of 38 studies on the subject:
antidepressants, antiparkinsonian drugs, antipsychotic drugs, anxiolytic drugs,
H2 antagonists, benzodiazepines, proton
pump inhibitors, and thyroid hormone.
One drug intervention was linked to a decreased risk of hip fracture: hormone replacement therapy with estrogen. The advice
researchers suggested to give patients at risk of fragility hip
fractures due to medications: details
about osteoporosis and fracture prevention. (2) That’s good
advice. Satterwhite Chiropractic is all about giving out information and would
add that new research indicates that supplementation helps.
Oxford CHIROPRACTIC SUGGESTED NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
AND HIP FRACTURE REDUCTION
As hip fracture is a serious complication of osteoporosis, a
non-drug approach like multivitamin use and its effect on hip fracture risk is most
meta-analysis reported on 8 studies on hip fracture risk and
multivitamin use. 80,148 subjects – 4237 of them had a fragility hip fracture –
were examined. The average age was 69 years. 21% were
male. Combined multivitamin supplements are already quite popular
and widely used. Their use was found to be
significantly protective against osteoporosis-related hip fracture. (3)
Satterwhite Chiropractic hates to
think any of our osteoporotic patients would deal with
a hip fracture!
