It’s
a world-wide epidemic: vitamin D deficiency. 14 in every 100 people around the world has poor
vitamin D levels. (1) One study reports that it
affects 1 billion of us worldwide. (2) Low vitamin D status is linked
to a varied assortment of diseases. Raising
vitamin D levels is beneficial and easy…if vitamin D supplementation is taken.
Satterwhite Chiropractic encourages our Oxford chiropractic patients to know
and improve as necessary their vitamin D levels.
Satterwhite Chiropractic is certain that positive health benefits
will result from this effort.
DISEASES LINKED TO LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS
A rampant vitamin D deficiency is associated
with many diseases. The incidence of cancers like lung, pancreatic,
colorectal, kidney, breast
is associated with low vitamin D levels. Diabetes, rickets, rheumatic
arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer diseases, benign paroxysmal positional
vertigo, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults are as well.
(1, 2, 3) Vitamin D plays a key role in calcium
homeostasis, skeletal metabolism, and the function of immune, cardiovascular
and reproductive systems. (2) Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also research-connected
to vitamin D status and bone mineral density. (3) It responds well to vitamin
D3 supplementation. Checking the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients is the test
as to the success of the treatment. (4) Satterwhite Chiropractic
notes that this is interesting as these two conditions are also known to be influenced by vitamin D status as well. Oxford
chiropractic care at Satterwhite Chiropractic benefits Oxford chiropractic
patients with these conditions.
BENEFITS OF RAISING VITAMIN D LEVELS
Supplementing those who take antidepressants with vitamin D
is shown to improve the antidepressive effect. Researchers suggest
that vitamin D may be beneficial for other such conditions beyond just
depression like schizophrenia, cognitive disturbances, attention deficit
disorder, and autism. (1) Giving a daily level
dose of vitamin D (1000 units/kg I.P.) to post-surgical back patients for 3
weeks straight alleviates
symptoms of neuropathic pain. (5) Satterwhite Chiropractic sees how
these benefits are worth the effort our Oxford
chiropractic patients would accept to elevate
low vitamin D levels.
HOW TO RAISE VITAMIN D LEVELS
A study of healthy young women showed that taking
calcium plus vitamin D (1500 IU) by those with less than 20ng/L or 800 IU of
vitamin D by those with levels of more than 20
ng/L. Both saw their vitamin D levels raise. The rise was seen
within the first 30 days
of the study for those taking calcium plus vitamin D. An
interesting side finding in this study: It is difficult
to get people to do what is suggested! Only 67 of the 106
study participants followed the directions for the 3 months of the
study! (6)
