Low back pain in older women demands some
attention. Researchers and chiropractic back pain specialists like your
Oxford chiropractor at Satterwhite Chiropractic offer attention! Women who experience back pain are a
special subset of our chiropractic practice with whom we love to work!
OLDER WOMEN AND Oxford BACK PAIN
A recent report shared that low back
pain among older women is linked to abdominal truck
muscle weakness. The women included in this study also
experienced reduced mobility function. Even their knee extensor
muscle strength was weak. What links these issues together?
Muscle. Researchers described that muscle weakness clearly
tied low back pain, malnutrition, and decreased
mobility function in older women. The good news was emphasized
that exercise enhanced these issues. (1) Satterwhite Chiropractic sees over and over the benefit of exercise for our Oxford back pain patients.
EXERCISE AND BACK PAIN RELIEF
Oxford chiropractic patients with back pain desire
pain relief. That is the goal of care. Our
patients frequently see other healthcare providers who recommend options like oral NSAIDs (number needed to treat (NNT) is
7 indicating 7 patients need to be treated for one
patient to experience benefit) and SNRIs like duloxetine (NNT: 10)
and exercise (NNT: 7). A new study found that these
options many times deliver clinically meaningful pain reduction
as shown by the above number-needed-to-treat statistics.
Which works over time though? Exercise. The researchers wrote
that the one intervention that demonstrated
sustained benefit after the study’s intervention time period ended
was exercise. (2) We present this to foster the
practice of exercise for all our Oxford back pain (and neck
pain) patients. Since this is an article focused
on women with low back pain, Satterwhite Chiropractic urges
our female patients who are a little older
to exercise. It’s part of the chiropractic treatment
plan that incorporates simple exercises as the starting
point!
