Melons Tasty and nutritious. Satterwhite Chiropractic treats back pain and neck pain and all types of spine-related pain and knows nutrition is important in healing and sustained health. Satterwhite Chiropractic encourages healthy eating, and fruits provide great nutrition benefits. Future thinking researchers are attempting new ways to grow healthy melons enough to keep us all fed! Oxford chiropractic services clients will find that research quite interesting!

BENEFITS OF MELONS

Every part of a melon - peels, seeds, and bioactive compounds – offered health benefits in a new study. A certain melon from Honduras – the Galia variety – attracted researchers’ attention for its antioxidative, anticholesterol, antidiabetic, antibiotic (against pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses), properties and thyroid function stimulation. (1) Agricultural researchers utilized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to review the phytocompounds of Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo L.) extracts. They uncovered 37 compounds in whole fruit and 14 in seed extract. (2) Growing healthy melons contributes to healthy humans!

A NEW MELON COMBINES BEST OF TWO MELONS

Something most of us do not consider is that cantalopes (“netted muskmelons”) are reported to be prone to surface contamination. What did researchers do in an attempt to tamp down this issue? They created a hybrid by crossing them with honeydew (“non-netted muskmelons”) to come up with an orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit! This new fruit “Cucumis melo L.” is reported to be rich sources of many human-healthy nutrients. The researchers studied and explained at length just where the nutrients are in each level of the fruit tissues! (3) Amazing what gets a person excited, is it not?

FUTURE OF MELONS’ NUTRITION

Another interesting side note discovered in collecting research about the nutritional value of melons is about growing melons (specifically the “carosello leccese” version of Curcumis melo L.) in a soilless, greenhouse environment with LEDs as supplementary light. This process did not negatively impact the nutritional value. The bioactive compounds for human health were still present including methyl gallate (antioxidative and antiviral), α-tocopherol, and β-carotene. (4) Interesting what today’s researchers are trying as global population grows to 9.9 billion by 2050 to keep us fed and healthy!
