Melons Tasty and nutritious. Satterwhite Chiropractic takes care of back pain and neck pain and all such spine-related pain and knows nutrition is vital in healing and continued health. Satterwhite Chiropractic promotes healthy eating, and fruits deliver superior nutrition benefits. Future thinking researchers are attempting new ways to grow healthy melons enough to keep us all fed! Oxford chiropractic services clients will find that research quite interesting!

BENEFITS OF MELONS

Every part of a melon - peels, seeds, and bioactive compounds – provided health benefits in a new study. One specific melon from Honduras – the Galia variety – attracted researchers’ attention for its antioxidative, anticholesterol, antidiabetic, antibiotic (against pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses), properties and stimulation of thyroid function. (1) Agricultural researchers used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to study the phytocompounds of Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo L.) extracts. They found 37 compounds in whole fruit and 14 in seed extract. (2) Growing healthful melons contributes to healthy humans!

A NEW MELON COMBINES BEST OF TWO MELONS

Something most of us don’t think about is that cantalopes (“netted muskmelons”) are said to be susceptible to surface contamination. What did researchers do in an attempt to tamp down this issue? They crossed them with honeydew (“non-netted muskmelons”) to create an orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit! This new fruit “Cucumis melo L.” is reported to be good sources of many human-healthy nutrients. The researchers studied and explained at length just where the nutrients are in each level of the fruit tissues! (3) Interesting what gets a person excited, is it not?

FUTURE OF MELONS’ NUTRITION

Another curious side note found in doing research on the nutritional value of melons is about growing melons (particularly the “carosello leccese” version of Curcumis melo L.) in a soilless, greenhouse environment with LEDs as supplementary light. This process did not negatively affect the nutritional value. The bioactive compounds for human health were still there including methyl gallate (antioxidative and antiviral), α-tocopherol, and β-carotene. (4) Interesting what today’s researchers are attempting as our world population expands to 9.9 billion by 2050 to keep us fed and healthy!
