Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Spine Discs?
If you've ever struggled with disc-related back pain or neck pain, you know how essential healthy spinal discs are to getting through your day through your day. Now, promising new research is examining a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, but two studies published in 2026 took a closer look into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the cushion-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammation pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In everyday terms, this helps disc cells remove damaged parts and function better, which may help delay the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different view. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a significant role in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin appears effective as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from advancing.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS
While more research is required before quercetin becomes a regular part of disc care, these findings build on a increasing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a helpful role alongside gentle, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Satterwhite Chiropractic, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's innate healing.
