Oxford CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum
The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and usually thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum triggers lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being studied as to how they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s two layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain. (6) Satterwhite Chiropractic and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Oxford chiropractic visit to Satterwhite Chiropractic.
